Air Canada cabin baggage explained

Air Canada’s standard policy includes a carry-on and a personal item without a published weight maximum, but Economy Basic has a route-specific exception. On selected North American and sun routes, newer Basic tickets permit only the personal item.

What your fare changes

The standard item is 55 × 40 × 23 cm and the personal item is 43 × 33 × 16 cm. For Economy Basic tickets bought from 3 January 2025, the standard item is excluded within Canada and on specified US, Mexico, Central America and Caribbean journeys; onward international itineraries retain it.

What to check before you fly

Air Canada includes wheels and handles and may use automated sizers. Because the Basic exception depends on both fare and itinerary, read the baggage line in the booking instead of inferring the allowance from destination alone.

Worked bag-size example

Take a slim personal-item bag measuring 42 × 32 × 15 cm. Compare it with the personal-item limit of 43 × 33 × 16 cm.

Side-by-side calculation
43 − 42 = 1 cm · 33 − 32 = 1 cm · 16 − 15 = 1 cm

The smallest dimensional margin is 1 cm, so the bag is within the size limit.

We compare the three outside edges after orientation, including protruding parts. A result with less than 0.5 cm of clearance is marked tight because measuring and packing can change the real size.
