Austrian Airlines cabin bag size
Everything you can bring on board Austrian Airlines — sizes, weight and cost.
Austrian Airlines cabin baggage explained
Austrian Airlines follows the Lufthansa Group pattern: Economy Light is a personal-item-only fare, while other Economy fares add the 8 kg cabin bag. The free personal item is unusually shallow at just 10 cm deep.
What your fare changes
The 40 × 30 × 10 cm personal item is part of every fare. Economy fares above Light include the 55 × 40 × 23 cm cabin bag up to 8 kg. Business and long-haul cabins carry more; the fare name, not the cabin, decides whether the trolley is free.
What to check before you fly
The 10 cm depth on the free personal item is strict — a padded laptop sleeve or slim backpack can fail on depth alone. Economy Light excludes the cabin bag, and the 8 kg weight applies to it. Count wheels and handles in both boxes.
Full baggage allowance
| Allowance | Max size | Weight | Fare | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Personal item / under-seat | 40 × 30 × 10 cm 15.7 × 11.8 × 3.9 in | — | All fares | Free |
Cabin bag / carry-on | 55 × 40 × 23 cm 21.7 × 15.7 × 9.1 in | 8 kg | Economy (not Light) | Free |
Worked bag-size example
Take a cabin case on a non-Light fare measuring 54 × 39 × 22 cm and weighing 7.5 kg. Compare it with the cabin-bag limit of 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg.
The smallest dimensional margin is 1 cm, so the bag is within the size limit. Its weight margin is 0.5 kg.
We compare the three outside edges after orientation, including protruding parts. A result with less than 0.5 cm of clearance is marked tight because measuring and packing can change the real size.
Austrian Airlines baggage FAQ
What size cabin bag can I take on Austrian Airlines?+
Austrian Airlines's cabin bag limit is 55 × 40 × 23 cm (21.7 × 15.7 × 9.1 in), up to 8 kg. Measure your bag including wheels and handles.
Does Austrian Airlines include a free personal item?+
Yes — Austrian Airlines lets you bring a personal item up to 40 × 30 × 10 cm that must fit under the seat in front of you at no extra cost.
How do I check if my bag fits Austrian Airlines?+
Measure height, width and depth in cm or inches and enter them into the checker — you'll see instantly whether your bag fits Austrian Airlines for free, is tight, or is over the limit, with the exact margin.
Is a cabin bag included on Austrian Economy Light?+
No. Light includes only the 40 × 30 × 10 cm personal item. The 55 × 40 × 23 cm, 8 kg cabin bag comes with higher Economy fares.
How deep can Austrian’s free personal item be?+
Only 10 cm. That shallow depth is the constraint most travellers miss, so measure a packed laptop bag or backpack carefully.
