Ryanair cabin baggage explained

Ryanair separates the bag that is included with every ticket from the larger bag that uses the overhead locker. The free option is an under-seat bag, so a compact backpack can qualify while a conventional wheelie case normally cannot.

What your fare changes

Basic includes the 40 × 30 × 20 cm small bag. Priority & 2 Cabin Bags and the Regular bundle add a 55 × 40 × 20 cm cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg. A 10 kg check-in bag is a different product: it is dropped before security and cannot be taken to the gate as a cabin bag.

What to check before you fly

Use the outside measurements of the packed bag. A bulging front pocket, fixed handle or wheel counts toward the sizer result. If two Ryanair products both mention 10 kg, check whether your booking says cabin bag or check-in bag before packing.

Worked bag-size example

Take a small travel backpack measuring 38 × 28 × 18 cm. Compare it with the personal-item limit of 40 × 30 × 20 cm.

Side-by-side calculation
40 − 38 = 2 cm · 30 − 28 = 2 cm · 20 − 18 = 2 cm

The smallest dimensional margin is 2 cm, so the bag is within the size limit.

We compare the three outside edges after orientation, including protruding parts. A result with less than 0.5 cm of clearance is marked tight because measuring and packing can change the real size.
