Cabin bag weight vs size
A cabin bag can be small enough and still fail because it is too heavy. It can also be light enough and fail one outside dimension. These are independent tests, and the safest packing decision comes from calculating both before you leave home.
The two tests a bag must pass
Each outside edge fits
Compare the packed bagโs longest, middle and shortest edges with the airline box. Include wheels, handles and full pockets. One negative margin means the size test fails.
The applicable mass stays below the cap
Subtract the packed weight from the airline limit. First check whether the cap applies to one piece, every piece separately or the cabin bag and personal item together.
Worked example: size passes, weight fails
A 54 ร 39 ร 22 cm trolley weighing 10.3 kg is checked against Wizz Airโs 55 ร 40 ร 23 cm, 10 kg Priority trolley allowance.
The overall result is โdoesnโt fitโ because the worse of the two tests decides the answer.
How common are numeric cabin weight limits?
Among the 52 indexable airline profiles in our current editorial set, 42 publish a numeric weight limit for the listed cabin-bag allowance and 10 do not. โNo published limitโ does not mean unlimited handling: the passenger normally has to stow the bag safely.

Separate, combined and unpublished limits
Per-piece limit
The cap applies to the named bag. Turkish Airlines, for example, lists 8 kg for the Economy cabin bag and a separate 4 kg limit for the personal item.
Combined limit
KLM, Air France and Norwegian use combined Economy limits in relevant fares. A 9 kg trolley plus a 4 kg backpack is 13 kg, even if each piece appears reasonable alone.
No published numeric cap
Several large US and Canadian airlines focus on size and require you to lift the bag into the locker. Local departures, partner airlines and smaller aircraft can still add restrictions.
Check both dimensions and weight
Enter all three packed dimensions and use the optional weight field. Results show whether dimension or weight is the limiting factor.

Weight and size FAQ
Does a carry-on have to pass both size and weight limits?+
Yes. Where an airline publishes both, the bag must pass every external dimension and the applicable weight rule. Passing one does not cancel a failure on the other.
What is a combined cabin baggage weight limit?+
It means the airline weighs the included cabin pieces together. For example, under a 12 kg combined allowance, a 9 kg trolley and 4 kg personal item total 13 kg and are over the limit.
Can I ignore weight when an airline publishes no carry-on weight limit?+
No published numeric cap usually means you must still be able to lift and stow the bag safely. Aircraft, route and partner-airline restrictions may also introduce a limit.
Is the personal item weight separate from the cabin bag?+
It depends on the airline. Some publish a separate personal-item cap, some combine both pieces, and some publish no numeric weight for either. Read the fare-specific note on the airline profile.
